DESCRIPTION:We look forward to supporting the annual Emma Martin lecture organised by the Bristol Humanists: \nThe Rights of Women with Sian Norris: Where Are We Now\, and Where Do We Go Next? \nThink today’s anti-abortion ideas are rooted in religious prohibitions or arguments about where life begins? Wrong: today’s anti-abortion movements is largely financed and planned by far-right extremists. Many of them are avowedly fascist and white supremacist\, afraid of a “great replacement” of the world’s white population by other races\, who are working hard to reshape governments and policies across Europe\, North America and around the world. Much of this far-right organizing and funding network\, however\, has been overlooked by today’s feminist and left movements. \nSian Norris is a Bristolian author and investigative journalist\, specialising in women’s reproductive rights and violence against women. Her recent book Bodies Under Siege is about the international rise of the far right and its impact on women’s reproductive rights. She has also visited and reported from Ukraine on the Russian invasion. Her journalism has included investigations into sexual harassment in the NHS and violence in prisons. Her work has appeared in The Guardian\, The Times\, New Statesman and The I\, amongst many others\, and she has reported from numerous countries\, including Kenya\, Romania & Bangladesh . SUMMARY:Bristol Humanists: Robin Dunbar on How Religion Evolved and why it survives
DESCRIPTION:We look forward to supporting this event organised by the Bristol Humanists with Robin Dunbar\, author of How Religion Evolved. \nWhen did humans develop spiritual thought? What is religion’s evolutionary purpose? And in our increasingly secular world\, why has it endured? \nEvery society in the history of humanity has lived with religion. In How Religion Evolved\, its origins are tracked back to what Robin Dunbar terms the ‘mystical stance\,’ the aspect of human psychology that predisposes us to believe in a transcendent world\, and which makes an encounter with the spiritual possible. He will explore world religions and their many derivatives\, as well as religions of experience practised by hunter-gatherer societies. This instinct is not a peculiar human quirk\, an aberration on our otherwise efficient evolutionary journey. Rather\, religion confers an advantage: it can benefit our individual health and wellbeing\, but\, more importantly\, it fosters social bonding at large scale\, helping hold fractious societies together. These dimensions might provide the basis for an overarching theory for why and how humans are religious\, and so help unify the myriad strands that currently populate this field. Drawing on path-breaking research\, clinical case studies and fieldwork from around the globe\, as well as stories of charismatic cult leaders\, mysterious sects and lost faiths\, How Religion Evolved will offer a fascinating and far-reaching analysis of this quintessentially human impulse to believe. \nRobin Dunbar is Emeritus Professor of Evolutionary Psychology at the University of Oxford. He is perhaps most famous for the ‘Dunbar Number’\, which is the 150 individuals that each human can sustain meaningful relationships with. His work in anthropology and psychology focuses on the mechanisms that underpin social bonding in primates in general\, and humans in particular. He considers that understanding these mechanisms\, which includes religion\, and the functions that those relationships serve\, will give us insights into how humans have managed to create large scale societies using a form of psychology that is evolutionarily adapted to very small scale societies\, and why these mechanisms are less than perfect in the modern world. He has authored numerous books in the fields of evolutionary psychology and anthropology. He is also a patron of Humanists UK\, and was one of the first national Darwin Day lecturers when the event was established in the early 2000’s. \nEveryone is welcome. DESCRIPTION:Join us to launch Colin Bramwell’s poetry collection Fetch. \nAbout the author\nColin Bramwell was born in Ayrshire\, grew up in Fortrose on the Black Isle and lives in Edinburgh. His poetry and criticism has appeared in Poetry Review\, Irish Pages\, The London Magazine\, PN Review\, Magma\, The Rialto\, New Writing Scotland\, Interpret\, Poetry Scotland\, Poetry London\, Poetry Ireland Review and The Scotsman\, as well as in his pamphlet The Highland Citizenship Test. He was the runner-up for the 2020 Edwin Morgan Prize. His translations of Taiwanese poets won the John Dryden Translation Competition and the Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize. Fower Pessoas\, his rendition of Fernando Pessoa into Scots\, was published by Carcanet in 2025 and was shortlisted for Scots Book of the Year. \nAbout Fetch\nIn Celtic folklore a fetch is a shadowy doppelganger that appears from the Otherworld\, portending the beholder’s fate. Your fetch ‘fetches’ you to the afterlife\, willingly or otherwise. Bramwell’s poetry uses the fetch as a model to explore a number of overlapping binaries – between the reader and the poem\, most of all.\nFetch also meditates on the differences between music and speech\, the sacred and the profane\, the written and the real\, humanity and nature\, Scots and English. Incorporating multitudes of modes\, forms\, registers and subjects\, Bramwell converses with the Anglo-Celtic lyric tradition in our own time and in his own distinctively amiable fashion. In other words\, this poet takes poetry seriously – but not too seriously.\nFetch is an astonishingly musical tour-de-force from one of Britain’s most exciting new poets\, in which reverence and irreverence\, religion and faithlessness\, the living and the dead\, nearly rhyme. \nJoin us for a drink\, a reading and a discussion.\nThe event is free to attend. Please RSVP to read@heronbooks.mom to reserve a place. \nIrish-born\, Bristol-based Yasmeen Ismail is an award-winning author\, illustrator and animator. Yasmeen studied at art school in her hometown\, Dublin. After graduating\, Yasmeen moved to London where she worked on many different projects ranging from advertising and short films to children’s publishing. After a few years of working hard in London Yasmeen changed career and began writing and illustrating picture books. Her illustrations are bright\, fluid and full of energy and movement. She loves to work with anything that will give her bright colours and good marks on the page. Yasmeen loves to experiment and expand in all areas of her work and is constantly trying new ways to improve her writing and drawing. Yasmeen has now illustrated over 15 books and has written 12 of them. She continues to make books everyday. When she’s not painting or writing you can find her doing the laundry. On occasion you may see Yasmeen out and about. Perhaps doing a show or visiting a school. She loves to make kids laugh and loves it even more when they make her laugh. She lives in Bristol with her husband\, their two little children\, and Betty the cat.

Taking examples from wars across the world\, the British industrial revolution\, and other pivotal moments in global history\, he uncovers so much that has remained hidden and untaught. \nDavid also writes and presents the long-running BBC history series A House Through Time. In her latest work\, How Animals Heal Us\, she explores how animals heal us as individuals with their vitality\, humour and empathy. They offer social remedies too: wolves may be teachers of ethics; bees take collective decisions and monkeys have a sense of justice. \nIn conversation with celebrated local author of Late Light\, Michael Malay\, Jay will reflect on the big questions that have always permeated her writing\, considering time and the rich wisdoms of Indigenous cultures\, and the necessity of challenging the status quo. \nDoors open at 7pm. Eloise Kane unearths 12\,000 years of our changing relationship with and influence on the landscape. Through prehistory\, Roman occupation\, the Middle Ages and beyond\, we see the unfamiliar beasts of our old wild make way for species such as brown hare and fallow deer\, now romanticised as eternal symbols of the British countryside\, but introduced much later than we might think.\nPlaces free from our influence haven’t existed for a very long time. But Eloise Kane invites us to rethink our definition of the wild – not as separate from us. Seen anew as the result of millions of human lives lived\, Wilderlands demonstrates how we are integral to the ecology and biodiversity of our land\, with the power to shape its future. \nAbout the author\nEloise Kane is an archaeologist. She is a Visiting Fellow at the Royal Agricultural University\, an Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society\, and previously served as Honorary Treasurer of the Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology. Her research interests are in landscape\, environmental\, and animal history/archaeology – historic parks\, hunting landscapes\, country houses\, woodlands\, animal sports\, and the relationship between humans and the wild. She lives on the edge of Salisbury Plain with a small menagerie of children and beasts.

SUMMARY:Thomas Halliday: Otherlands with Bristol Humanists

Travelling back in time to the dawn of complex life\, and across all seven continents\, award-winning palaeobiologist Thomas Halliday gives us a mesmerising up-close encounter with eras that are normally unimaginably distant. \nYou will be immersed in a series of ancient landscapes\, from the mammoth steppe in Ice Age Alaska to the lush rainforests of Eocene Antarctica\, with its colonies of giant penguins\, to Ediacaran Australia\, where the moon is far brighter than it is today. We visit the birthplace of humanity; we hear the crashing of the highest waterfall the Earth has ever known; and we watch as life emerges again after the asteroid hits; and the age of the\nmammal then dawns. He has been a researcher and a graduate student at the University of Bristol and at University College London\, and as a postdoctoral researcher at University College London and the University of Birmingham. He was an Honorary Fellow at the University of Birmingham and is an Associate with the Natural History Museum. He is also an international croquet player. \nDarwin Day has been celebrated since the 1930’s\, marking the birthday (Feb 12th) of arguably the world’s greatest ever scientist\, Charles Darwin\, the father of evolution by natural selection. Bristol Humanists has held a Darwin Day annual lecture by a noted scientist for the last 10 years. DESCRIPTION:For our January monthly poetry reading\, we are delighted to Erica Hesketh. \nErica Hesketh is a poet and editor\, originally from Japan and Denmark\, now based in London. From 2016 to 2024 she was Director of the Poetry Translation Centre. Her debut collection In the Lily Room is published by Nine Arches Press and explores early motherhood. \nFree entry. It examines a new mother’s journey through mental illness\, her relationships with her body\, her baby and other people\, and the often surreal landscape of mothering\, against a backdrop of a changing and uncertain world. \nA dreamlike birth sequence full of eels\, foxes and floodwater empties onto a London postnatal ward\, where reality sets in. Rudderless and anxious\, the new mother writes notes to herself\, joins support groups and tries medication.
